Australia's Parks....
Australia has over 680 National Parks (according to 2016 CAPAD data). Over 30 million hectares of land is designated as national park land, accounting for almost 4 % of Australia's land areas. In addition, a further 13 % of Australia is protected and includes State Parks, Conservation Areas, Nature Reserves, etc. In total, about 18% of Australia's landmass comprises Protected Areas. In all, the protected areas cover an area bigger than the State of South Australia.
Australia has six (6) separate States and 2 Territories:-
Each of these States and Terrtories have different types of parks, and each State or Territory has its own authority/ies which controls those parks.
At this stage, the majority of Australian parks covered in the WWFF program are National Parks. However, the WWFF program has been expanded in Victoria, The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and South Australia. This is due to the amount of park activity in those areas. In Victoria, Coastal Parks and State Parks now qualify for the WWFF program. In the ACT, Nature Reserves also qualify for WWFF. And in South Australia, a total of 132 of the 271 Conservation Parks qualify for WWFF.
National Parks are usually large areas of land that are protected because they have unspoilt landscapes and a diverse number of native plants and animals.
The majority of Australian National Parks are managed by the States and Territories of Australia. However, the Australian Federal (Commonwealth) Government manages six National Parks and a further 13 Marine Parks.
